The legendary Nell
This is one of the earliest photos taken of a Labrador taken in 1867.Nell- A St.John's dog was a foundation dog for our modern Labradors.Notice the white muzzle and feet, modern breed standard calls for no white in the coat color. As a Labrador ages white or greying occurs on the muzzle and feet. This trait could be a left-over from the St.John's Dog.
Ben of Hyde-Was the First ever recorded Yellow Labrador Retriever in 1899.
In the early years of breed development the fox red or dark yellow was the original shade of the yellow Labrador. These early yellows were dark golden or butterscotch tinged with red.The darker yellows were the norm until after WWII when trends started leaning towards the lighter shades of yellow.
